Michigan has several bills that are rolling over from the 2009 session, all of which could be detrimental to term limits. The most notable one is HJR L, introduced by Representative Cushingberry, which is an outright repeal of the current term limits law, in a close second is HJR U, introduced by Representative Lemmons, this bill calls if passed would create a unicameral legislature as well as repealing the current term limits law. There is also HJR W, and HJR EE which creates a part time legislature. HJR EE would limit their eligible time in off to 16 years in either or both chambers, HJR OO a similar bill to HJR EE would allow only 14 years in office.
In the senate there are 3 bills that need to be watched; SJR A, SJR E, and SJR G. SJR A, introduced by Senator Bishop, in its current state will create a part time legislature but could be easily amended to repeal term limits. SJR E, introduced by Senator McManus, would repeal the Congressional Term Limits provision in the Constitution. SJR G, introduced by Senator Jacobs, would shorten the term length of Committee Chairmen to 4 years but would double the number of terms they are allowed to serve.
