South Dakotans Still Support Term Limits

Results from a poll conducted last week show South Dakotans overwhelmingly support term limiting their legislators.  Over 64 percent of poll respondents stated they did not want South Dakota’s term limits eliminated or extended.

These results come three weeks after the State Legislature placed SJR 1, a ballot question asking for the repeal of the current 8 year term limit, on the November ballot.

US Term Limits President Philip Blumel had this to say regarding the polling, “To justify the measure, politicians claimed that the citizens of South Dakota wanted an end to term limits.  Clearly, they don’t. The purpose of Question J is to please career politicians and lobbyists, not the voters.”

Additionally, the polling showed that 65 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of Democrats favor the current term limits law, making this a bipartisan consensus.

“For them to pass a measure for personal gain while claiming it is the will of the people is blatantly dishonest.  These results show that South Dakota voters, regardless of party affiliation, do not want term limits changed.  South Dakotans will soundly reject Question J.”

Over the past year, voters in Maine and California soundly rejected ballot referenda to weaken term limits on their respective state legislatures.
